FACETS OF THE ENGLISH SCENE Gary Hogg, David and Charles 1971. Toll houses (now fast dying out); lych gates (many of them dating back over the centuries); signposts and milestones; churchyard crosses and tombstones (a permanent source of interest and originality); thatch and wrought-ironwork (in which the craftsman of today echoes the skill of his forefathers); walls and stiles (as good an example of regional differences as may be found anywhere in the country); these are some of the facets of the English scene. Gary Hogg presents with lucid text and original illustrations in this colourful portrait. Here is a book to fascinate the curious-minded traveller, whether native or from overseas. Though self-contained, it adopts the pattern established by the best-selling Odd Aspects of England by the same author. The jacket has been price clipped and there is a 3cm vertical split at the top leading edge of the same, together with some very light and limited creasing. Other than this both the book and the dust jacket are in good condition. The book is packed with interesting photographs and articles. The photography is in black and white, which in my opinion creates a special atmosphere to the subject |
