A HANDBOOK OF EXAMINATIONS IN MUSIC

Containing 600 Questions, with answers, Ernest A. Dicks, Novello & Co., 1899.

The questions are in; Theory, Harmony, Counterpoint, Form, Fugue, Acoustics, Musical History, Organ Construction, and Choir Training, together with Miscellaneous Papers as set by various examining bodies.

There is a little rubbing to the outer cover, very slightly frayed at the top of the spine and the boards, being of a fawn colour, are slightly grubby. There is a name, written in ink many years since, at the top of the cover. Inside, there are occasional ticks, mainly pencil, occasionally pen. Since these are infrequent and do not go beyond the margin, they are insignificant to the eye.

Apart from limited and very minor foxing here and there, the book is in good condition and still tightly bound.

Some examples of some of the questions are; ‘Write a scherzo of, at least, thirty bars upon the varied treatment of this subject’; (music follows). ‘ Explain the three classified forms of musical works.’ ‘ Point out the general diversity of outline. Show any diversities of treatment.’ If this is making sense to you, perhaps you might wish to own the book!
