In 1986 Gerry Adams President of Sinn Fein, published The Politics of Irish Freedom, his personal statement of the meaning and motivation of modern Irish republicanism. Free Ireland: Towards A Lasting Peace is the second edition of that book, and brings Gerry Adam’s account of republican politics up to the present day (at 1995). Against a background of tumultuous change in the North of Ireland, he discusses the role of republicans in creating the conditions for peace, and looks at how the exercise of self-determination can secure a new future for the island of Ireland. He examines the positions of other key players – in Dublin, Belfast and London – and the importance of international opinion in influencing the pace of change. Free Ireland is an eloquent and authoritative account of republican politics from the early 1960 to the present moment.
