Dr. Prime, a lifelong botanist and an experienced teacher, here provides the ideal introduction and companion to the appreciation of the English countryside, from the familiar woodlands, hedgerows, grasslands and downs of lowland Britain to the more remote but nevertheless fascinating flora of marshes, moors, wasteground, mountain tops sand dunes. At each stage we are introduced not just to the plants themselves, many of which normally go unnoticed, but to the complex relationships which underlie the life of the community and sustain the various plants of which it is composed. There is advice, too, for the collector of wild flowers and a clear account of the concepts – and importance of ecology. The line drawings are by Marjorie Blamey and the diagrams by Diedre Yuill. All the illustrations, including the photographs are in black and white. This is a superbly informative book and would make a nice addition to any botanical shelf. There is no dust jacket, rather, pictorial cover boards.
