PLYMOUTH, MARITIME CITY IN TRANSITION

Edited by Brian Chalkley, David Dunkerley and Peter Gripaios, Foreword by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh KG., Lord High Steward of Plymouth, David and Charles 1991.

This book was published to mark the 1991 visit to Plymouth by the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Plymouth is blessed by nature with one of the world’s finest harbours – the sea does not simply mark the city’s edge, it is central to the City’s livelihood and personality. But Plymouth is now undergoing changes that are likely to re-shape it’s economic, social, cultural and political profile. Written by experts on the varied aspects of the city, the book looks at current issues such as tourism, housing, architecture, defence, transport, health care and education as well as the history of Plymouth. It provides a fascinating insight into the only British city to increase it’s population in recent years (to 1991), and more recently rated in a university study as England’s best city. 255 pages on Plymouth, it’s history and prospects at 1991, by various contributors. Apart from some light creases to the extremes of the dust jacket, mainly to the rear, both the book and the dust jacket are in very nice condition, the pages are clean, tightly bound, and almost as new. The book is illustrated. As it is a heavy tome parcel or surface mail may be required.
