THE STORY OF ENGLAND, MAKERS OF THE REALM

Arthur Bryant , Collins 1953.

This is the first of Arthur Bryant’s famous and universally acknowledged three volume work on the history of England, in which, in his own words, " My history contains fewer names, battles, political events and Acts of parliament, but dwells longer on certain deeds and words that stirred the hearts of Englishmen and awoke their imagination." The Saxon thanes dying to the last man at Maldon and the house-carls in the stricken ring at Senlac; Becket towering above his murderers in the darkened cathedral, and the jingling Canterbury pilgrims riding through the Kentish fields ‘ the holy blissful martyr for to seek ’; Robin hood in the greenwood and the ‘grey goose feather ‘ falling like hail at Crecy and Agincourt.

The dust jacket has chips and splits and is rubbed and worn but largely intact. The boards are very slightly sunned at the edges (minimal). The pages themselves are nice and clean and tightly bound. A very nice item for the history section of anyone’s bookshelf.
