WE, THE PEOPLE, THE STORY OF THE UNITED STATES CAPITOL Its Past and Its Promise, United States Capitol Historical Society 1964. This book is a labour of love. For all its scholarship, this is no historians source book, no dry text. The excitement inherent in the story of a lust young nation would itself ensure engrossing reading. But every talent has been pressed into revealing that story as the gripping and meaningful one it really was. The wealth of pictures includes famous paintings, as well as photographs and drawings from all the periods covered. The quality of the reproduction of these carefully selected pictures is apparent at a glance. The research for this book was deliberately compressed to tell a brief but well rounded story. The aim of the United States Capitol Historical Society was to make a book that would attract all Americans to read the story of their Capitol that they might gain in it a fuller understanding of our past and a deepened faith in our promise. The dust jacket is rubbed and worn at the extremities and has some creasing around the top. Apart from this the top inside corner of the jacket has been price clipped. The book itself has some slight shelf wear in parts but not excessively so. The glossy pages are nice and clean and still tightly bound. The endpapers are decorative reproductions of the original declaration document. |
