HERALDS AND HISTORY

Roger Milton, David and Charles 1978

Heralds and History combines in one volume two related subjects normally treated separately. It provides a detailed and well illustrated explanation of the technical terms and rules of blazon of the science of Armory.

It also explains how individual coats of arms properly interpreted can be a valuable source of historical knowledge. The book opens with a short history of the office of herald, and of the English College of Arms. Succeeding chapters describe the item of the heraldic achievement, tinctures, rules of blazon, and the significance of crests, coronets, and other items commonly found in the achievement.

The historical significance of mythical beasts, animals, birds, flowers, fish and inanimate objects blazoned on shields or found in crests are explained and illustrated. There are also chapters on ecclesiastical heraldry, the seal, and banners and standards. Finally, the book provides illustrations and histories of the arms of many famous people and institutes from medieval times to the present day.

Apart from the fact that the jacket has been price clipped and there is a biro name inscription towards the top of the fep, both the book and the jacket are in good condition, clean and tightly bound.
