Shirley Toulson has long been fascinated by the pattern of the past which is still traceable beneath the surface of modern industrialized Britain. The roads along which we drive, the country lanes along which we walk, the farms and villages in which we live or through which we pass: nearly all are superimposed upon earlier ones, the traces of which – from standing stones and crosses to field patterns, farm names and local legends – are surprisingly evident – if we care to look.

The book is illustrated with numerous drawings by Oliver Caldecott who also provided the pictures for two earlier books by Shirley Toulson –

Apart from some slight edge wear and a minor corner crease to the lower rear tip, the book is in good condition. A well written and informative work.
