THE FIXED-SPOOL REEL Peter Tombleson, Herbert Jenkins 1961. The fixed-spool reel is an item of tackle that is still regarded with suspicion by a minority of both game and coarse anglers. But this outlook, once widely held, is rapidly dying out as more and more anglers come to realize that the objections to the fixed-spools use are founded more in prejudice than irrational reasoning. The principal criticism that it allowed even the non-expert caster to achieve a high standard of proficiency no longer recommends itself to the majority of modern anglers. For surely it is a confused argument which holds that no skill is worth while unless it is difficult to master! Among all but the die-hards the fixed spool reel has established itself for the simple reason that it enables the angler to cast light tackle long distances with accuracy. It is now an essential item in the equipment of tens of thousands of anglers and the purpose of this admirable book is to show how to use it under all conditions. The dust jacket is rubbed, creased chipped and folded, although the main picture is still largely intact. The boards have very slight edgewear. The last nine pages have a fold-back crease to the lower tip. The pages are clean and tightly bound. A nice piece of nostalgia this, written when fixed-spool reels were still comparatively new. Once upon a time, it might have been centrepins! |
