THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC: A STILLNESS AT APPOMATTOX

Bruce Catton

PBS 1953

The third of a trilogy by Bruce Catton covering the final year of the American Civil War, for which he received the Pulitzer Prize.

A US reviewer wrote of this book;

"A Stillness at Appomattox" is the third of a trilogy on the history of the Army of the Potomac, the Union fighting force that fought at Antietam and Gettysburg, and endured huge losses in the Wilderness, at Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor. I have not read the first two books of this trilogy and it is not a requirement to enjoy "A Stillness at Appomattox." This book is completely self-contained, beginning from the point that Ulysses S. Grant takes command of the Army of the Potomac in March 1864.

This copy comes from a private library, having two circular, embossed owners logos on the fep and title pages, a very nice personalised ex libris label on the title page, and a small, neat ink inscription on the verso of the fep. The book is very slightly cocked (miniscule) and the page edges are very mildly light tinted. The pages are clean and tightly bound. The dust jacket is good, other than for two or three very minor splits at the extremes. Some of the entries in the index have been ticked or crossed in pencil. Overall it is in good condition. An absorbing item for those interested in this period of the American Civil War.
