William George

Blandford Colour Series paperbacks 1980

World Architecture presents a comprehensive review of the evolution of architecture from its origins to the present day. The basic function of building is examined and the basis for the development and variation of the different styles and schools of architecture is explained.

The author begins with an examination of primitive and prehistoric architecture and proceeds to review the origins and development of the ancient and classical styles of Egypt, Assyria, Persia, Greece and Rome, which have influenced many of the later schools of European architecture. In addition to the Byzantine, early mediaeval and Gothic styles of Europe, the importance of Indian, Arabic and Oriental styles is also emphasized. After describing the Renaissance and Classical architecture of Europe the author concludes with a survey of modern architectural trends.

The 48 page colour section contains 64 superb full-colour photographs of architectural examples from all over the world, covering a period of some 3000 years. There are in addition21 black and white photographs. The cover picture is of Florence Cathedral, Italy.
