WRITERS CRITICS AND CHILDREN

(Articles from children’s literature in education)

 Various Editors

 Heinemann 1976

 Medium octavo, 245 pages.

Charlotte’s Web, Watership Down and A Wizard of Earthsea are striking but by no means unique examples of the high quality of writing for children in recent years. Many distinguished authors have found children’s literature a satisfying medium and it is therefore fitting that the present collection should begin with reflections by writers, including Joan Aiken, Nina Bawden and Geoffrey Trease.

Critics have played their part in the development of children’s fiction the second part of the book includes some outstanding examples of critical work which have helped to chart the direction it has taken. Peter Dickinson offers ‘A Defence Of Rubbish’, David Holbrook writes on ‘The Problem of C.S.Lewis and other contributors include Penelope Farmer, Russell Hoban and Fred Inglis.

The book will be invaluable to teachers, student teachers, librarians and parents.

The book has a clear cover over the dust jacket which shows signs of shelf wear but is in good condition. The dust jacket proper is clipped and has an original price label affixed. The fly leaf has a couple of pencilled prices at the top corner. The pages are clean and tightly bound.
