COMMANDO Brigadier Durnford Slater D.S.O. and Bar Tandem paperback 1973. No. 3 Commando, about 500 hand-picked men and all volunteers, fought a hand-to-hand war from the Mediterranean to the Arctic Circle. They learned their skills in hit-and-run raids on the coasts of Occupied Europe; they destroyed valuable installations at Lofoten and Vaagso, and took part in the ill-fated Dieppe Raid. They fought their way through Sicily and operated ahead of the Allied advance in Italy. Back in Northern Europe, the Commando spearheaded the D-Day landings in Normandy, and were in the forefront of the action all through the final campaigns of the war. In its five years of battle, the men of No. 3 Commando won 8 D.S.O. s, more than 30 M.M.s and five D.C.M.s. Their first commanding officer, who trained and led them in battle, has written an epic story of their exploits. Apart from some rubbing to the top and bottom of the spine, and some very slight light tanning to the page edges, (very slight), the book is in good condition, and still tightly bound |
