SAMUEL PEPYS, THE YEARS OF PERIL Arthur Bryant RS Crown 8to, 333 pages, rep 1952 The book covers the first period of Pepy’s great work as Secretary of the Admiralty. It begins with the attack on the Navy which first brought Pepys into close contact with Charles 11 and caused him to keep his second diary. It reaches its climax in the attempt to implicate him in the Popish Plot and closes with his reinstatement on the eve of silaing for Tangier. Not only does the volume reveal for the first time Pepys’ full stature as an administrator, but it is a contribution to one of the most romantic periods in English history. The dust jacket is rubbed at the extremes and has a couple of minor splits. The spine is sunned. The front board has a tiny (miniscule) bump close to the spine. The book is in good condition, clean and tightly bound |
